Ways to Spot out an Illegitimate Contractor

The process of building or remodeling is hard but working with an illegitimate contractor can make the process much harder. Here are a few ways you can spot an illegitimate contractor.

Providing Quotes “off the top of the head”

An honest contractor will never provide you a quote “off the top of their head”. Instead, they will examine the problem and will later give you a written thought out quote that includes the cost breakdown of both labor and parts. If you find yourself with a contractor that easily jots down a price on a piece of paper without looking more into the problem then you should find yourself a new contractor IMMEDIATELY. Giving a quote “off the top of the head” is only acceptable when the problem is a very minor one that could easily be fixed without much time.

Can’t Provide You with a Business Card

Whatever business a person is in, it is professional for them to always have business cards, especially for contractors. Even if it is a small business contractor, a business card is still necessary for it shows that they are legitimate. Also the business card should have a street address and not a post office box. This is very important because you want to be able to locate them if there are any questions or concerns. Try to avoid those that are not able to provide you with a business card for they can more and likely be scam artists.

Not Able to Give Out Referrals

Avoid any contractor that is not able to give out referrals. Any successful contractor would be excited to provide you with names and comments of well pleased customers that they have worked with over the years. If they are not able to provide you with referrals, go check for yourself on popular review websites such as Angie’s List and HomeAdvisor.
